Advocate
As a young girl, Sue could be found on an outdoor rink taking figure skating lessons, on a field playing field hockey, hiding behind the portable during track and field practices or on horseback competing in show jumping at local gymkhanas.
Watching Rod Laver compete at Wimbledon as a young teenager led to her love for tennis – watching, playing and competing, a passion that continues to this day. When there was no one around to pick up a game of tennis, she took up squash and became involved on the board with Squash BC, chairing the Women in Squash committee, developing a grassroots program called Emerging Women and Girls in Squash.
Inspired by corporate and community leaders who embrace the values of sport to as a foundation for organizational success, she has been a passionate and committed leader in the amateur sport sector. She was the first female CEO of the BC Sports Hall of Fame taking the stories of inducted members throughout BC, and then the first female CEO for Tennis BC.
For the last 25 years she has actively engaged with government and sector agencies, continuing to advocate and step up as a spokesperson to ensure that there are ever-emerging opportunities for those who identify as girls and women to participate in sport and recreation, on the field and in the Boardroom.
As past chair, director, mentor and advocate for ProMOTION Plus, she advocates for Women’s Ski Jumping sport in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and worked relentlessly with the Board to find a new ‘home’ for the society when funding was not renewed, resulting in a strategic relationship with Sport BC, ensuring that there continues to be a voice for girls and women in sport and physical activity in BC.
